Mac's Apparition Hazy IPA
Hmm. Perhaps the worst hazy I've had, but not necessarily a bad beer. A few of the ex-craft breweries have put out fairly under-par hazies, and it turns out Mac's is no exception. This one is probably hazier than any other Mac's beer (other than their Witbier and White IPA), but not really hazy enough to be a "hazy". It's got a reasonably nice nice floral fruity hop whiff, but actually not too much hop flavour, which is the biggest disappointing feature. But it has a very nice smooth slightly sweet maltiness to it, I'm guessing they've used some oats or at least wheat in there, and seem to have done that part of it fairly well.
I'd be interested to understand the motiviation to produce a Hazy IPA without making it very hazy or very IPA like; were they just trying to cut costs and reduce the price of hops (hops are the most expensive brewing ingredient, and to get a decent hazy you really need a lot of them), or were they trying to produce a "mild" hazy that they could sell to the masses? Either way it's kind of like if you took a very plain lager and mixed it with a decent hazy - so it definitely tastes like beer, and kind of gives you a taste of what a hazy is. I think that perhaps NEIPA just shouldn't be mass produced... But all of that aside, it's not a bad beer, and I didn't have a problem getting through a six pack.
